Leeds biker's rosy outlook
Pink isn't the most macho colour for a biker.
But that's what Chris Glew plans to wear when he takes part in the 2,000-mile Cannonball Bike Run in Morocco this summer.
The 36-year-old hairdresser, of Hemsworth, near Pontefract, has secured one of just 30 places in the annual event which attracts bikers from across the world.
He hopes to raise 15,000 for Yorkshire Cancer Research (YCR).
The dad-of-one said: "I know pink's a bit different from the traditional black leathers.
"I've already had some gip from my mates but it will get me noticed. I was inspired by the Race For Life which highlights breast cancer. It's a women-only event and they all dress in pink.
"But it's not only a female disease. Men get breast cancer too so I wanted to highlight that and raise money for YCR. A couple of close family members are fighting cancer, so it's a theme close to my heart."
Chris, who lives with partner Dawn Banton, 35, and their daughter Shauni, four, is in training to lose two stones for the gruelling five day challenge which starts on June 22.
On the day he and his Honda VFR 750 Sports Tourer will fly out to a meeting point in Malaga before the organizers ship all 30 riders across to Morocco.
During the run each rider will be followed by a support team in case of a breakdown or accident.
Chris said: "Every stage is a sort of time trial. We touch the Sahara desert and the Atlas mountains, although we only find out the exact route when we get to Morocco.
"I hope to raise 15,000 but I'd like to smash that if I can.
"I'm getting fit with the help of my mate Colin Ward, who runs the Northern Wing Chun Kung Fu Association in Leeds, and he's promised to put me thought the pain barrier.
"I don't know which is going to be harder – raising the 15,000 or losing the two stones."
His pink biking gear was donated by J&S Accessories of Leeds and Motografix of Doncaster has agreed to deck his bike out in pink vinyl.
To sponsor Christopher visit justgiving. com and go to Cannonball Bike Run or go into his Arena Hair hairdresser's shop at 59a Market Place, Wetherby.
