Leeds: Appeal over wind farm rejection

An appeal is being launched against the rejection of plans for a wind farm in east Leeds.

Durham-based Banks Developments had an application for permission for the scheme at Hook Moor, near Micklefield, rejected by city council bosses last July.

The decision was made after the Ministry of Defence (MoD) voiced concerns that the wind farm's giant turbines could interfere with radar equipment at RAFs Church Fenton and Linton-on-Ouse.

Now Banks is bidding to revive plans for the facility, which would consist of five propeller-style turbines, each reaching a height of 125 metres (410 feet).

The firm held discussions with the MoD to address issues that prompted its objection to the application.

Banks says the wind farm would create enough energy for more than 8,000 homes without the production of environmentally-damaging greenhouse gases.

Residents in the Micklefield area believe land earmarked for the development is too close to their homes.
