Leeds Abbey Dash 2009: Record entries received

A record number of people have signed up for the Leeds Abbey Dash 10km race, say organisers.

The fundraiser for Age Concern and Help the Aged, with backing from the Yorkshire Evening Post, will see around 8,000 runners hit the streets, starting outside the Town Hall.

Runners will be able to enjoy picturesque views as they pass Kirkstall Abbey before heading to the finish line.

Leeds City Council has extended the number of entries from 6,000 to 8,000.

Participants will be running alongside local celebrities such as Claire Young, a finalist in The Apprentice, and Leeds model Nell McAndrew, who will also be leading a warm-up for runners at 9am in Victoria Gardens, in front of the art gallery.

Last minute entries for Sunday's race were being accepted until noon today.

Sarah Greene, events fundraiser at Age Concern and Help the Aged, said: "We've had a record number of people sign-up to the Leeds Abbey Dash this year and we're delighted the event continues to be so popular.

"The temperature may be falling, but the competition is hotting up, with over 50 Leeds companies competing to see who will cross the finish line first – and we're looking forward to cheering each one every step of the way.

"We're calling on each runner to make the most of their place in the race by raising as much as they can."

She said fundraising tips included:

* Setting a target: Big or small, it helps to have something to work towards. We suggest you set yourself a target of 35 – that's only 5 from seven family or friends.

* Ask friends, family, work colleagues and business contacts for sponsorship. Use sponsor forms or JustGiving, the online sponsorship site (visit www.justgiv ing.com for more details).

* Tell everyone what you are doing. Use email signatures, work notice boards, local press and answer phone messages. Visit the Age Concern and Help the Aged website for sample letters.

* Persistence really pays off. You don't want to pester people too much, but there's nothing wrong with sending out an email reminder a couple of weeks after your first request. People genuinely forget and will appreciate the prompt."

* Anyone who would like to take part should visit: www.helptheaged.org.uk/dash or call 020 7239 1982.
