The school that made the biggest gain was Lawnswood. It saw the proportion of students gaining five or more passes between grades A* to C, including the core subjects of English and maths, jump from 34 to 51 per cent.
The result means the school is now above the national pass rate of 47.6 per cent.
"The core subjects are a real strength in our school," said Milan Davidovic, Lawnswood's head teacher.
"Those strengths have been built up over a number of years and we are now seeing the results.
"We are very pleased with this set of results, but our aim is to do even better next time."
The school, which specialises in maths and computing. had borrowed ideas from others schools while improving their own methods and building on established strengths in the sixth form, said Mr Davidovic.
