Lawnswood School pupils get ready to stage poetry slam

Lawnswood students are to present a grand poetry slam under the guidance of local performance poet Michelle Scally-Clarke.

The Lawnswood Interform Poetry Slam Competition (Year 8) is taking place on Thursday, March 13, from 6pm onwards.

This is a spoken work competition between teams on the theme "Who are you anyway?" - performances about identitiy. This is in conjunction with Headingley Literary Festival and links to The Stephen Lawrence award.

Workshops and the final event will be lead by Leeds performer Michelle Scally Clarke (she has a website and can be be found on My Space). Michelle Scally Clarke has published two collections of poetry, and has worked with many notable artists including Gill Scott Heron and Benjamin Zephaniah.

Michelle laid bare her life in her acclaimed first book I Am, which traced her turbulent journey from care, to adoption, to motherhood, to performer. She Is picks up from where that book left off and follows her rises and falls and the patterns that appear in her life as she matures and peaks as a woman in her early thirties.

Slam promises to provide an excellent evening of entertainment for all so please come and support the event!

The cost is 1.50 for children and 2 for adults.
