Lawnswood School crowned Leeds City basketball champions

Lawnswood School saw off stiff competition to be crowned Leeds City basketball champions.

After a string of stunning victories over Carr Manor, Cardinal Heenan, Primrose and Allerton Grange, the Year 11 basketball team qualified to take part in the Leeds City Finals held at Leeds Met Carnegie, Headingley Campus on Saturday, March 8.

New additions to the team included star siblings Joe and Charlotte Carrick whose efforts proved pivotal in securing wins in all four previous matches.

Lawnswood faced stiff competition at Carnegie against the likes of Morley, Intake, Abbey Grange and Brigshaw.

Fortunately, Lawnswood's strong team spirit and skill saw them secure wins over all four teams to become Leeds City Champions!

All team members raised their game despite missing Joe Wood due to tonsillitis. Voicech Sereiskij achieved top scorer status while Nathan Paterson earned the hustle award with excellent rebounding throughout the tournament

Joe Redfern and Joe Carrick played a fantastic defence and Elliot Booth-Wade was consistently strong in both attack and defence. Patrick Melia, Robbie Griffiths and Charlotte Carrick all worked exceptionally hard in the games with Charlotte achieving Most Valuable Player status against Brigshaw.

Under the direction of coaches J Burley, R Melara and D Chadwick, the next fixture sees Lawnswood take on Poynton High School (Cheshire) for a place in the last 16 of the English Schools Basketball Championship.
