Landmark really is the gateway to Cross Gates

Cross Gates is to get its own landmark monument. Click here for more details.

Work is currently underway on the feature, which will be mounted on the roundabout linking Cross Gates Road with the inner ring road.

Designed by civic architect John Thorp, the structure includes three crossed gates, which will give the impression of movement to the passing motorist.

The scheme was originally the brainchild of Jennifer Lancaster, who ran florist Arts and Flowers and played a leading role in Cross Gates Traders' Association.

It was taken up by Jennifer's daughter, Kirsti Cale, after her mother died in 2005.

Kirsti said: "We felt that Cross Gates needed some sort of landmark.

"You see places out in the suburbs saying 'welcome to our area,' but there was nothing in Cross Gates.

Positive

"This will let people know where they are and hopefully help raise the

profile of the area."

The gates design has been road-tested on the people of Cross Gates, who, Kirsti said, gave it the thumbs-up.

She added: "There was a lot of public consultation, we had a mini version of it that went on display and people were asked to say what they thought about it. It was very positive.

"People do feel that Cross Gates is out on a limb, they are proud of their area and were in favour of something that would give it extra identity."

But, despite the extra identity provided by the monument, it looks unlikely to solve the "Cross Gates" or "Crossgates" spelling debate.

Kirsti added: "That will go on and on, I don't know if anything will stop it!

"I got poison pen letters about it not long after we started the traders' association."
