Kippax's own The Unsung Heroes INTERVIEW

"It was brilliant, the best thing we've ever done," says Rob Sumner of Kippax band The Unsung Heroes' debut at Liverpool's legendary Cavern club.

"We went down really well, we got a really good response. They've asked us back, which is a good sign. We took 40 people from Leeds with us. We've got a good local fan base."

Things are certainly going well second time around for the four-piece from Kippax, with regular bookings for gigs and an appearance at Barnsley's annual Bom-Fest coming up.

But the band is not without its tragic past. In 2004 their original drummer Steve Roberts was killed in a motorbike accident. "We stopped playing for four years," says rhythm guitarist and singer Rob. "Then last year we found a new drummer and started back up."

With new recruit Adam Woodburn now firmly ensconsed in their ranks – alongside Rob, singer and lead guitarist Dean O'Grady and bassist Bex Cowell – The Unsung Heroes have been gigging around Leeds, Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Wakefield and Manchester. "We've played 15 or 16 gigs in the last few months and been on Radio Leeds twice," says Rob, "We're doing all right."

The band – whose influences range from "old stuff like The Beatles, the Kinks and the Rolling Stones" to Britpop bands Pulp and Ash, with some David Bowie and Bon Jovi in between– are now on the lookout for a manager. "We just need somebody who has a lot more time than I have doing it," says Rob, who, like the rest of the band, currently has a full-time day job.

They are also hoping to record some new songs. "We have not recorded since we reformed," admits Rob. "We recorded a demo before Steve died but then we never did anything with it. The songs on our MySpace page have Steve drumming."

In the meantime The Unsung Heroes play at The Primrose on Friday, June 12 and Escobar in Wakefield on Friday, June 19. Admission on the door
