Kids boot camp comes to Roundhay Park

A summer American-style "boot camp" aimed at showing youngsters how to enjoy themselves outdoors without safety risks or legal problems is being staged in Roundhay Park.

Activities organised by the police include: how to stay safe in the park, the dangers of carrying weapons, a treasure hunt, safe handling of animals, including snakes, lizards and other creepy crawlies as well as football, softball, martial arts and training by the British Military Fitness organisati on.

The theme of the two-week programme, organised for 30 youngsters from across north east Leeds is "conflict, crime and citizen" and involves elements of education, sport and straight forward fun. The camp is open to youngsters aged eight to 13.

The itinerary has been put together by Safer Schools police officer Dave Brook who hopes to engage and educate young people about rights and responsibilities.

The boot camp has been funded by Leeds City Council's north east inner area management committee. It is backed by ward councillors, Leeds City Council, Karate for Inner City Kids, Positive Futures, Roundhay Park Estates, British Military Fitness and the RSPCA.

PC Brook said: "This programme offers young people an opportunity to explore issues of citizenship in the park and promotes community safety. They will also be tested mentally and physically through a series of demanding challenges and fun activities."

Coun Matthew Lobley (Con, Roundhay) said: "I'm really pleased that this programme is focusing on young people's responsibilities. This will be a way for the kids to stay safe, have fun, and learn something at the same time.

"I am delighted that PC Brook has thought up this wide range of activities, and I'm sure it will be over subscribed so anyone interested should sign up to avoid disappointment."

Coun Richard Harker(Lib Dem, Moortown) said: "It's good to see our young people engaged in such a positive programme that links sport with being a good citizen."
