Jail sentences for pair who ran filthy Leeds restaurant
The owners of a West Yorkshire restaurant have been given suspended prison sentences after customers fell ill with a stomach bug normally found in the Middle East.
Although 64 people were confirmed as having the rare giardia lamblia parasite after dining at the now defunct Saffron Indian restaurant in Ilkley, the total number of people made sick could have topped 300.
The food poisoning outbreak in 2007 sparked an investigation after dozens of people suffered diarrhoea and stomach cramps.
Bradford Crown Court heard that environmental health officers found food and hygiene breaches during visits to the restaurant in autumn 2007.
Prosecutor Michelle Brown told Recorder Carl Gumsley: "This was a food premises riddled with E.coli and giardia lamblia."
The new owner Mohammed Ayub, 35, had not registered the premises after taking over the business in July 2007.
Miss Brown said the inquiry revealed the restaurant was dirty and two staff were infected with the giardia lamblia parasite.
The two defendants' barrister Tahir Khan said Abdul Ghafoor, 34, a private hire driver, had lent his co-defendant 15,000 to buy the lease and he had lost all that money.
Ayub, of Westlands Grove, Allerton, Bradford, and Ghafoor, of Fagley Road, Bradford, both pleaded guilty to food hygiene offences and admitted obstructing the investigation.
Ayub, who had been working in the restaurant, had his nine month prison sentence, suspended for two years. He must also do 250 hours community work and pay 250 towards the costs of the case.
Ghafoor had his six-month jail term suspended for two years. He was also ordered to do 250 hours unpaid work.
Both men have been banned from being involved in the management of a food business.
