In the market for taste and sounds of Asia
"BAZAAR" things are happening in Leeds – with the launch of a new market in Asian fashion, food and culture.
The Bazaar, which will take pride of place at the Kirkgate market every Wednesday, includes 101 stalls selling spices, handbags, clothes and jewellery.
It is hoped the Bazaar will generate additional interest in the market, which recently started opening all day on Wednesdays, as well as drawing customers to a range of stalls selling Asian sweets, fabric and clothing.
Director Hassan Ali said: "We wanted to bring something new to Leeds and this is completely different. It will be like a real bazaar like you get in India or Pakistan."
Entertainment at yesterday's launch was provided by traditional Bhangra dancers, Waris Punjab De and Dhol player Rani Taj.
While adults were browsing the goods on offer, youngsters were also able to take part in face painting, balloon art and amusement rides.
Bosses hope the Bazaar will attract anyone interested in Asian food, culture and fashion to the centre of Leeds instead of travelling further a field.
Cath Follin, Leeds City Council's head of city centre and markets, said: "The bazaar will provide a great injection of colour to the open market and ensure that the whole market is offering a great shopping experience.
"The aim of this market was to attract a different clientele and offer something different from the normal market that takes place on other days.
"It is great that we are going to have the addition of the Bazaar market to compliment the fantastic offer already available in the indoor market and also to support the all day opening of the indoor market on Wednesdays."
As an added incentive, the market will offer free parking after 2pm on Wednesdays if shoppers take a receipt for over 5 to the market office.
The Bazaar will open every Wednesday in the outdoor area of Kirkgate market from 10am until 6pm.
