Ilkley Grammar: New sixth form may help meet demand
A new sixth form centre is being proposed following the collapse of hopes of a brand-new building for Ilkley Grammar.
Following the General Election in May, the new Government scrapped Labour's plans for a new school on green belt land in Ben Rhydding as part of the Building Schools For The Future programme.
Now local councillors are looking at other ways of solving the problem of the increasing competition for places at the high-achieving school.
Calls to build another secondary school serving Burley and Menston have come from Ilkley councillor Anne Hawksworth.
She says the site of the former Ilkley Middle School could be one option to combat the overcrowding issue.
The former Bradford Council executive member says the need for more space on the school's Cowpasture Road site may mean building a sixth-form college on another site.
She said: "Building another school elsewhere in the valley would be the appropriate thing to do."
