Horsforth traffic lights roundabout bid

A busy Horsforth roundabout could soon have traffic lights installed to improve road safety.

Leeds City Council has released funding to allow design work to take place for the scheme at the busy roundabout junction of the A6120 with the A65 near Horsforth Hall Park.

Preliminary design work should be completed by July.

It will be followed by a consultation exercise and detailed design phase.

Coun Brian Cleasby (Lib Dem, Horsforth) told the Yorkshire Evening Post that more work still needed to be done to improve the ring road at Horsforth.

He said: "It is obviously something we have been fighting for years.

"If you think about it even though you can put traffic lights to control the flow of traffic we are still faced with the problem of

getting down the single lane on the hill.

"It is three lanes of traffic fighting to get into one.

"There is definitely an awful lot more room for improvement.

"You need three new bridges in the bottom of the valley to make any sense of the ring road at all."

Coun Andrew Carter, executive member for development and regeneration, said: "As a regular user of the junction I am well aware of how busy this Horsforth roundabout can get during peak times.

"It is widely used as a link road to the airport and as a route into Leeds.

"With such a large volume of traffic making use of this roundabout it is important that we undertake works to improve traffic flow and road safety here.

"Funding has been provided to allow officers to undertake design work to ensure that we implement the best possible scheme for this busy junction.

"I am very pleased to see this work advancing and I am sure that other regular users of this roundabout will welcome the work being carried out."
