Trainee Submariner Alistair McInnes joined the Royal Navy in March this year and was selected as class leader during the nine weeks basic training course.
The 20-year-old's duties included taking charge of the group in the absence of their instructor and the class was awarded the Ganges Trophy under his leadership.
The trophy was for collectively achieving the best marks throughout the nine weeks and Alistair collected the trophy on behalf of the class during the passing-out parade.
The former pupil of Horsforth School said: "I joined the Royal Navy because I wanted a good job with good prospects. I also wanted a career to be proud of, to travel the world and live life to the full.
"Training has been a real challenge and it's a great achievement to finish the course."
Now ready for the next stage of his training, Alistair has transferred to HMS Drake for his professional course to qualify as a warfare specialist.
There he is learning how to observe the weather and survey the world's oceans and coasts to support a wide range of Royal Navy operations.
