Horsforth: Former Leeds Rhinos star meets aspiring sports stars

Former Leeds Rhinos star Barrie McDermott met pupils from Horsforth's Froebelian School when he presented awards at the school's annual sports awards ceremony.

Pupils, aged from eight to 11, were awarded Colours and Medals for fantastic achievement in Sport, such as athletics, football, cricket, netball, rounders, swimming, cross-country and outdoor pursuits.

Apart from many individual triumphs across the board, Froebelian School came seventh out of 23 schools in the Leeds Cross-Country Championships; the Netball team were runners-up in the City High Five Tournament out of a starting lineup of one hundred teams; the Boys Swimming Team secured overall first place in the U11 Boys competition at a Yorkshire Prep Schools Sports event organised by Ashville College in Harrogate.

Year 6 pupils all qualified to take part in the School's 10th Annual 3 Peaks Challenge and recently walked a total of 28 km with more than 1500m of ascent and descent of Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen y ghent, over a three day period.

The pupils slept in a bunkhouse where they had to assist staff with cooking duties, washing up and cleaning.

The final meeting for Athletics will take place in July at the Airedale & Wharfedale School Sports Association Championships, where the School is quietly confident of some medal winning performances.

Barrie congratulated all the pupils on their magnificent achievements over the year and encouraged them to keep up with, and develop, their sports when they moved on to senior schools and throughout their lives.
