Horsforth drama group in musical extravaganza

In the words of their latest show, 80 youngsters from a Horsforth drama group aged five upwards were "born to perform."

Children from Horsforth's Scala Performing Arts have rehearsed for over 10 hours a week since September, hoping to raise funds for Martin House Hospice.

Last year they gave 6,000 to the charity and they hope to beat that amount this year.

They will demonstrate what they have achieved over the last seven months when they present a musical extravaganza at Yeadon Town Hall from April 23 to 26.

The two-and-a-half hour production will start with Disney characters and include music from current hit shows like We Will Rock You, High School Musical and Hairspray.

A group of six will perform the old Bernard Cribbins hit, Hole In the Ground, while carrying huge shovels.

Scala spokeswoman Yvonne Hare, whose own daughter Bethany, eight, features in five numbers, said: "The show has involved a lot of commitment, rehearsing on Wednesdays after school for four hours and then on Sundays for six to eight hours.

"But the kids just love it. My little girl is buzzing when I pick her up. The songs are fantastic and the outfits, made by one of our ladies, are unbelievable."

Some of the senior children at Scala – whose studio is off Low Lane, behind the Driver Testing Centre – were unavailabe for the revue because they had to study for GCSEs.

Scala Performing Arts was founded 35 years ago by Lynne Walker who trained 12 girls for a local panto in a Bradford cinema called Scala – hence the name.

It has an outstanding reputation for producing new talent and one of its students, Matthew Lewis, 18, is currently filming Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince in which he plays the part of Neville Longbottom.

"We get emails every day from producers wanting children for use on TV," said administrator Debs Hemingway.

Young students regularly appear in TV commercials and shows like Emmerdale, Heartbeat and The Royal.

* Tickets for Born To Perform cost 10 for adults and 8 for children and pensioners. Call (0113) 2757183.
