Proposals to build houses on the site have proved highly controversial.
The six applications submitted for the original scheme – a mixture of conversions and new building – attracted 4,459 letters of objection.
Councillors for the area, Greg Mulholland MP and seven community organisations were among those opposing the plans, which would involved the loss of a protected playing pitch and a large number of one-bedroom flats.
The original plans have now been altered and, when all the necessary information has been received by the council, the revised scheme could go out for further public consultation.
Members of the council's west plans panel were told that 29 town houses would be built on the Victoria Road playing field, town houses and flats would be developed on the main school site and Rose Court, a listed building, would be converted into homes.
Ford House gardens would become a new public park.
Councillors heard it was still the intention for a sports hall and pool on the site to be run by Leeds Metropolitan University with some public access, though there was still no agreement between school and university.
Coun Colin Campbell, panel chairman, said: "We need to be confident the panning department has all the information needed to go out to public consultation but I don't think it has.
"We need to send a clear message to the school – they need to provide us with all the information."
Coun Jamie Matthews (Lib Dem, Headingley) said a decision was needed.
He argued there was no significant differences between the latest plans and what was originally proposed to warrant more consultation.
