Headingley hospice auction rises above ring theft
An antique gold ring worth about £50 was stolen from a display cabinet during an auction held in aid of Wheatfields Hospice in Headingley. Click here for more details.
The thief stole the ring, which was mounted with sapphires, during the viewing period at St Chad's Community Centre on Headingley Road last Saturday.
Some 400 lots included jewellery, toys, photographic equipment, porcelain and furniture.
The event raised nearly 9,500 for Sue Ryder Care Wheatfields Hospice.
Items of special interest included a diamond ring which fetched 300 and a tray of costume jewellery which was knocked down for 520.
Wheatfields sales manager Barry Peel, who organised the auction with his wife Helen, said: "It's a real community event. The items are donated and a lot of the preparing for the actual auction is done by volunteers, so most of the proceeds go to help with the cost of patient care.
"With all that help and support we are not going to get too upset by one mean-spirited theft."
