Mr Hurst was an accountant, but during the war he was sent to work down the mines near Doncaster. His friend Tony Kessler recalled how the two of them started the Friends a dozen years ago.
"We were walking down West Avenue one morning when we said to ourselves: 'This place is a mess. Let's do something about it'.
"We called a meeting at St John's School and I sent out some flyers to publicise it. The public were very interested so we set up the Friends. I did publicity at that time and Harry became the treasurer.
"He was an officer and a gentleman. He and his wife were devoted and did everything together."
In a letter to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Nicholas Jones, of Ladywood Mead, Asket Hill, wrote: "He will be dreadfully missed, especially for his knowledge, understanding and belief of what the parkwas about."
