Harehills: Crackdown on illegal motorists

Vehicles were stopped at the roadside in Harehills as part of a multi-agency crackdown.

Police along with licensing and immigration staff were stopping cars at random along Harehills Lane near to Foundry Approach, Harehills.

Nine separate agencies including the Gipton and Harehills Neighbourhood Policing Team Leeds City Council Environmental Action Team and Wardens Leeds City Council Taxi Licensing VOSA Customs and Excise DVLA Benefits Agency Immigration Service Her Majesty's Court Service Warrant Officers, were involved.

A drugs dog was also used to search vehicles.

Inspector Nik Adams, who leads the Gipton and Harehills NPT, said: "The activity was wide ranging and involved a number of agencies working alongside the police.

"We were checking any criminal links that cars may have through ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) technology as well as their history and whether they were insured and road legal alongside officials from the DVLA and VOSA .

"Any cars found to be without insurance were be seized and face the possibility of being crushed.

"Anyone not legally entitled to drive was arrested."
