The facility, on Kendal Drive, is the culmination of 18 months work finding a building, converting it, and securing funding for its future.

Officers from the Cross Gates, Whinmoor and Temple Newsam neighbourhood police team will use the house to ensure they have presence in the heart of the community.

They are encouraging local people to keep in regular contact with the officers responsible for that area.

Police contact points will also be held at the new building, to give those living and working locally an opportunity to raise any issues they feel need to be addressed by officers.

The community house will also provide a base for other community organisations including Stop Hate UK and local housing associations.

Youth workers will also be based at the house for educational and social development programmes.

Insp Stuart Mason told Cross Gates Today: "There has been a substantial amount of work from a number of organisations to get this community house up and running and I think it will prove to be a real asset to the community.

"From a policing perspective this allows officers to remain in the heart of the community and is a demonstration of our commitment to the Policing Pledge where we guarantee to spend 80 per cent of our time visibly working in local neighbourhoods.

"While it's important to stress this is not an operational police station, it does enable us to work more effectively in the area.

"Having police officers embedded in the local community as recognisable faces who the public feel at ease to approach and raise any issues that concern them is a key aspect to successful neighbourhood policing."
