Shirley Patterson, who has been a volunteer at the Barnardo's shop in Halton for 22 years, has been awarded a Marsh Trust Award. The awards are given in recognition of the contributions of unsung heroes in the community.

The grandma of 18 and great-grandma of five was nominated for the award by colleagues at the shop in recognition of her hard work and dedication over the years.

Shirley will be presented with her award on Friday ( 6 March 2009) by Peter Allinson, Director of Barnardo's Yorkshire.

Shirley said: "I was gobsmacked when I was told I'd won the award, I didn't know what to say. I'm really proud, it's really a very nice thing to get.

"Working here is lovely, I get a lot from it. There's a lot of nice people who have become friends and you get to know the regular shoppers. It's a good atmosphere."

Manager at the shop, Pippa Kellett, said: "Shirley is just brilliant, we're really lucky to have her as a volunteer. She's taken charge of the shop when we've been without a manager. There's nothing Shirley can't do, she's just fabulous."

Shirley became a volunteer back in the 1980s, spurred on by a desire to do something rewarding as well as care for her children and help with her husband's business. Barnardo's has many volunteering opportunities.
