Guiseley: Car park barriers to keep out travellers
Action is being taken to try to stop travellers returning to a public car park in Guiseley.
Local councillors have agreed to fund the installation of heavy-duty height barriers at the entrance and exit to the town's Netherfield Road car park.
The barriers are 2.5 metres high and it is hoped that, as caravans average 2.7 metres high, they will prevent travelling families setting up camp on the site.
A fence is also being put in place to provide extra security at the car park, which was occupied by travellers for about a week in September.
Coun Graham Latty (Con, Guiseley and Rawdon) said: "The travellers that took over the site left behind a large amount of mess which cost the council a great deal of money to clean up.
"These new barriers should stop travellers from settling on the car park ever again."
Netherfield Road is not the only part of Guiseley to have suffered problems with travellers this year.
Caravans were moved onto vacant land next to Harry Ramsden's fish and chip restaurant twice in the space of six weeks over August and September.
