Garforth youth theatre prepare for productions

Garforth's own St Mary's Youth Theatre is currently rehearsing two fantastic productions due to be performed in the very near future.

The School's Edition of Jonathan Larson's musical Rent will be performed at the Carriageworks Theatre at the end of this month followed by Disney's Aladdin Jnr which is due to be performed in Garforth early in the new year.

The Bray family are to take important roles in both productions.

Ryan Bray, a 15 year-old student at Garforth Community College, takes on the demanding lead role of Roger Davis, a songwriter who is HIV positive, in SMYT'S production of the rock musical Rent.

While his younger brother Josh, 12, also at Garforth Community College, is cast as Aladdin in the Disney classic.

Not to be outdone the youngest brother Jake, 8yrs old, also has a part in Aladdin along with their 12yrs old cousin Joseph Sherburn. Even the brothers' Dad Kevin is involved as part of the Rent back-stage crew.

Ryan has been with SMYT for a number of years playing roles such as Gavroche in Les Mis, Khashoggi in We will Rock You and most recently as Troy Bolton in High School Musical. Josh has been waiting patiently in the wings and now has his own chance to shine as Aladdin.

Rent is a rock opera and tells the story of one year in the life of a group of bohemians struggling in modern day East Village New York . The story centres around Mark and Roger, two roommates. While a former tragedy has made Roger numb to life, Mark tries to capture it through his attempts to make a film. In the year that follows, the group deals with love, loss, AIDS, and modern day life in one truly powerful story.

Based on Puccini's La Boheme, Rent tells the story of one year in the life of friends living the Bohemian life in modern day East Village, New York City, 1989-1990. It is also the most challenging show St Mary's Youth Theatre has ever undertaken.

Rent opens at the Carriageworks on Wednesday November 25th and runs until Saturday 28th. Tickets can be obtained from the Box Office on 0113 224 3801.

Details of Disney's Aladdin Jnr will be released in the near future.
