Garforth: Sneak-in burglary rise prompts warning
A rise in sneak-in burglaries in Garforth and Swillington has prompted warnings from police and a local councillor.
Inspector Chris Jones has called for residents in Garforth, Swillington and Great Preston to step up their security measures in light of the latest crime spree.
He said: "In recent weeks we have seen a rise in burglaries where car keys and handbags have been taken when doors and windows have been left unlocked or open.
"This is unusual for the area and we have increased the number of high-visibility patrols as well as arresting and charging a 28-year-old man on Saturday with handling stolen goods," said Insp Jones.
"We have worked hard over the last year to reduce burglary and at the present time there have been 40 fewer incidents of burglary than there were at the same time last year.
"I ask local people to remain vigilant and remember to lock doors and windows as well as keeping any valuables away from entry points."
Coun Mark Dobson (Labour, Garforth & Swillington) said he was urging residents of Garforth, Swillington and Great Preston to make sure doors are locked.
In recent weeks thieves have taken advantage of the dark nights to get into homes through unlocked doors to steal handbags and car keys and he stressed such opportunistic thefts were easily prevented.
Coun Dobson said:"Garforth and Swillington traditionally has an extremely low crime rate – and we want to keep it that way. We hope this increase in theft is a short-term problem."
"The police are working very hard to tackle the problem. They and I urge local people to be extra vigilant when it comes to locking their front doors."
