FYDP: Windfall pays for a lick of paint for old bus
Young people in Farsley have a little more colour in their lives – and it's all thanks to the YEP's Community Cash Giveaway.
Farsley Youth Development Project (FYDP) was one of dozens of groups which won a grant from our 2008 annual giveaway.
And, after the youngsters spent their 900 windfall on repainting their double-decker community bus, the results are plain for all to see – in glorious technicolor.
The new-look vehicle has been dubbed 'The Sub' by the youngsters –
'bus' spelt backwards.
FYDP was set up in 2003 by local people, youth workers and churches, and since then it has gone from strength to strength.
Over the past year alone the group's dedicated network of volunteers have donated 1,000 hours of their own time – equal to 143 working days –to help and inspire hundreds of young people in the area.
Howard Bradley, co-ordinator of FYDP, said the cash from the YEP giveaway had been a complete surprise, but a most welcome one.
"I didn't even know about it, it was a brilliant surprise," he said.
"Our project is about the local community getting stuck in.
"It was somebody who has passion for the community (who applied for the
cash].
"We spent the money on our double decker. The young people renovated it themselves. They worked with a professional artist for four weeks to change the design."
The result was a new-look bus with a vibrant blue colour theme, which Mr Bradley said had turned out to be a "tremendous" piece of joint artwork.
There are just a few days left for hardworking groups, charities, clubs and community projects to apply for a share of the 2009 YEP Community Cash Giveaway.
Once again, the YEP is teaming up with the generous folk at the Leeds Community Foundation to distribute money from its Grassroots Grants scheme to deserving causes.
This year we've got 50,000 to give away.
To apply for a grant of up to 900, you must be a locally-based charity, community or voluntary group with a constitution or set of rules (we cannot fund individuals or schools).
