Former Headingley pupils invited to celebration before merger
Memories of more than a century of education at Leeds Girls' High School in Headingley will be shared at a special celebratory weekend.
The Headingley-based girls move to Alwoodley in September to join the boys at Leeds Grammar School in a merger.
But before that happens, LGHS is celebrating its history with an open weekend on May 3 and 4.
A spokeswoman said: "The school will be open to all past pupils to walk down memory lane in familiar rooms – like the assembly hall which holds honours boards from 1885; and the library with its Robert Thompson Mouseman furniture.
"Visitors will view archive materials; take part in musical activities; share their memories; and leave messages on boards."
The original day school for girls opened on September 2, 1876, with 42 pupils aged eight to 16.
In 1906, the present buildings on Headingley Lane opened in September on land bought from the Morley House estate.
Three generations of one family from Alwoodley and Shadwell, who have attended the school since 1942, have their own memories.
Adrienne Harris (nee Cowen), who attended from 1942-8, recalled: "In spite of it being wartime, I have happy memories of my time at LGHS and am pleased my parents chose this school for me.
"Mrs Kirk, our headmistress, was small in stature but a very formidable lady.
"Woe betide anyone taking off their hats coming to school or going home – I was caught out doing this, so I remember it well!"
Adrienne's daughter Linda Lee went to the school from 1964-78 by which time the dress code had been relaxed.
"Mum was surprised we were allowed to wear our own clothes in sixth form," she said.
"I have fond memories in senior school of Jewish assemblies being held in the library with chairs decorated with mice.
"I was obviously very happy there as I chose to send all my three daughters there!"
Her girls are Simone who was at the school from 1990 to 2004, Alex (1991-2005), and Joanne (1994-present day).
Linda says that by attending parents' evenings and concerts, she has noticed how the school has changed over the years.
All former pupils are encouraged to view the website for further information under the Alumni section of www.gsal.org.uk or contact June Apps on Leeds 274 4000.
