Flood victims put weir work top of washout wish list
Furious flood victims claim the weir at Roundhay Park's Waterloo Lake is the source of their misery.
People on the Dunhill estate in Halton have now drawn up a "washout wish-list" they believe could help to keep their homes dry with calls to raise the weir their number one priority.
Many of them suffered their third flood in four years earlier this summer when Wyke Beck became swollen and eventually burst its banks.
David Davenport, chairman of the Dunhill Flood Action Group, said raising parts of the weir would slow down the flow into Wyke Beck and buy the residents valuable time.
He said: "If the level at the lake rises by just 10mm, the weir pours an extra 2.6m gallons into the beck every hour.
"The further the lake rises, the more water there is. Raising parts of the weir four to six inches would slow it down and buy us time."
A Leeds City Council spokesman said the Environment Agency was working on a Wyke Beck flood alleviation scheme.
He said: "The agency is examining all the options that might solve the problems at the Dunhills and Wyke Beck.
"We are sure they will consider the suggestions from the Dunhill Flood Action Group."
