Farsley: Plaque marks baptist chapel
A special ceremony in Farsley has commemorated church history.
Pudsey Civic Society has sponsored a plaque which records the first foundation of Farsley's First Baptist Chapel in 1777.
It was unveiled at Westbourne House by Mike Ramsay, owner of the property.
The date stone of the former Rehobeth chapel is incorporated in the rebuilt east wall.
At the time of its construction, there was no Anglican presence in Farsley and, though the Methodists had been there since the 1760s, they did not have their own chapel until 1827.
The Rehobeth was built half a mile from Farsley village on land given by Thomas Thornhill, Calverley's lord of the manor.
A new chapel was built nearer Farsley in 1868 but the Rehobeth continued to be used as a Sunday School until 1905.
From then on the building had a chequered history and was let to a variety of tenants before being sold about 1980.
The property is now let as self-contained office suites.
