The council refused permission for the scheme at Kirklees Knowl, Bagley Lane.

The decision went to appeal and the Government-appointed planning inspector has ruled the development can go ahead.

Coun Andrew Carter (Con, Calverley and Farsley), council leader, said: "I am horrified by the appeal decision to overturn the council planning department's refusal for building on this greenfield site.

"Decisions like this only make me personally more determined to fight this Government's pernicious housing policies which damage the environment, jeopardise regeneration of brownfield sites and seem designed only to destroy communities.

"The council is now going to consider it's position and whether to mount a further challenge."
