Mr Brown MBE, whose epic fundraising has seen him climb the highest mountain on each of the world's seven continents, was at Richmond House School in Headingley.

He told the YEP: "Coming and talking to children is like reliving the experience all over again. It's wonderful to see their reactions to the stories and to answer their questions."

Mr Brown's exploits began on his 40th birthday in 1986 when he climbed the Matterhorn in Switzerland to raise funds for those suffering with schizophrenia.

After that the North Yorkshire farmer set the target of climbing each continent's highest mountain.

He finished the quest in May 1999,when, aged 53, he reached the summit of Everest.

Now aged 62, Mr Brown still goes on some expeditions as well as occasional school visits.

He has also set up a workshop called Claro Enterprises, a working environment for people with mental health problems.
