East Leeds mum thanks medics who saved daughter's life

She looks like any other two-year-old girl cuddling her mum.

But Georgia Lawn's parents are eternally grateful to a medical team that their daughter is still around to play with her family.

Back in March, Georgia, then aged 19 months, suffered a near-fatal fit.

The swift action of emergency medical technician Amanda Marshall and paramedic Andy McLoughlin, who are based at Yorkshire Ambulance Service's Sherburn in Elmet centre, stabilised her condition before she could be rushed off to hospital.

Georgia's mum Leeanne, who is expecting her third child in October, is so grateful to the pair that she has asked them to become godparents. "I can't thank them enough," said Leeanne, who lives in the village.

"I don't think the ambulance service gets the praise they deserves, as they do so much work you never hear about."

The family's drama began after a day out at the end of March. Georgia's temperature had begun to rise and her mum gave her some children's medicine and tried to settle her down.

Leeanne said: "She started to have a fit and was foaming at the mouth and shaking. We stripped her and tried to get her temperature down but it wasn't working, so we called 999. The ambulance seemed to be here in seconds and they took over."

Georgia was treated for low oxygen levels as she was taken to Pontefract General Infirmary (PGI), where three paediatricians and a consultant worked on her in the resuscitation unit.

Medic Amanda said: "We are occasionally called out on jobs where a child is fitting, but it normally only lasts a minute and the child begins to recover. This was different because it was a prolonged fit. It had gone on for about ten minutes and when we got Georgia to PGI, the A&E team had quite a job on their hands."

After Pontefract, Georgia was transferred to Leeds Genera Infirmary for further treatment before going back to PGI.

By coincidence Amanda and Andy were on duty again that night and were able to arrange to take Georgia back home themselves.

"We were thrilled to be able to do that because this was once of those cases that really gets to you," said Amanda. "It's great to see Georgia fit and healthy again and it's nice to be thanked in this way, although we only did what any of our colleagues would have done that night."
