Did aliens land in grounds of Leeds school? SLIDESHOW
It looked like the Roswell incident all over again.
A UFO appeared to have crashed in the grounds of a Cookridge school and its injured alien pilots were said to have been taken away.
There was wreckage just like that strewn across the ground at Roswell in America in 1947 and the crash site was taped off by police.
Word was that two strange looking beings were being treated somewhere nearby.
But, while the mystery that surrounds Roswell has never really been totally explained it gradually emerged that the Cookridge Incident was devised as a project to focus on the children's drama, ICT and writing skills.
The week-long project began with the discovery of the wreckage of a spaceship on schools grounds.
"We had an incident tent over the top and all around the scene was carnage, with bits of silver everywhere and wreckage from the craft," said teacher Stephanie Robinson.
"We then held an assembly to inform pupils about what had happened, and to draw up a plans what to do next. A few older children had doubts but most of them believed it was real.
"While we were talking to the children, they spotted two purple aliens through the window. They were friendly so we brought them into the hall, where they were able to communicate by miming. After that, they went up to the first aid room for treatment because they appeared to have been hurt in the crash."
Over the next few days, all 250 youngsters were involved in learning projects centred on their unusual visitors, who happened to be the same size and height as two absent members of staff.
Pupils built their own mini rockets and put together TV reports.
Following the school's investigations, the aliens were able to repair their craft. By the time the youngsters arrived for lessons on Thursday, the space creatures had blasted off to their home planet of Dockergoi (by pure coincidence an anagram of Cookridge).
