Fran's Ordination at Worcester Cathedral – 5 July

After having our tickets inspected three times, we were allowed to enter and despite being exceedingly early we selected our seats and took in the atmosphere. As we waited we tried to spot others from Cross Gates whom we knew were also making the trip to support Fran at this very special occasion. Diane and Fran were the first ones we saw and whilst Fran hurried off to meet fellow ordinands, Diane took her seat a few rows in front of us. We mulled over the spiritual journey that had brought Fran to this point, as Diane confided that the desire to commit her life to full time service had been part of Fran's thinking for the past twenty years.

There was an atmosphere of anticipation and togetherness in common purpose as we pointed out 'our' ministers to each other. Gradually the hustle and bustle slowed down and the service was ready to begin. What an amazing venue for such a hallowed occasion. I felt a sense of awe amidst the grandeur and splendour uncharacteristic of Methodism. Worship has taken place in Worcester Cathedral for the past thirteen centuries and here we were to witness the ordination of the latest thirteen Methodists to take up the challenge of God's call on their lives.

The preacher, David Walton, had something special to say about each candidate as he introduced them all to us. The service centred round the promises they had all made to declare the Good News, celebrate the Sacraments, serve the needy, minister to the sick, welcome the stranger and seek the lost. We sang some moving and rousing hymns and it was a delight to hear all those voices raised in praise to the accompaniment of the wonderful organ. Each new minister had hands laid on them as a sign of God's spirit at work within.

Communion was open to all, with the ministers and their families occupying the space in front of the altar whilst the rest of us were invited by stewards to partake at various other stations. The organisation was fantastic, not disrupting the atmosphere as we sang some well loved choruses whilst we waited for our turn. What wonderful, joyful singing once again. After a final blessing, the service was over.

The moon rose as we travelled home, a peaceful close to a momentous journey for us all. Hazel Watson.

A letter from Tracy Martin who is now leaving Nepal.

Dear All

Just wanted to say thanks to all of you who have contributed to the fundraising for the Self-Help Group for Cerebral Palsy this year – some of you by buying my books etc and some of you by organising events in the UK or making individual contributions. I know some of you have put a lot of effort into this. We raised 1600 pounds sterling and this supports the community work in Sindhulpachowk for one year – one community worker visits over 30 families with children with cerebral palsy.

Assistive devices made of local material are provided. Children are support to go to local schools. In addition, there is a parents' group which provides support to families and lobbies for provision for children with celebral palsy. Recently, sewing classes were run for women in these families so that they could support themselves better.

I won't be asking you to raise money next year but, if any of you are interested in contributing individually (as I will do) then please contact Bimal Shrestha at sgcp@mail.com.np and he will give you bank account details. Thanks again for your support. Tracy

Fathers Of 1950 vs. Fathers of Today

In 1950, a father waited for the doctor to tell him when the

baby arrived.

Today, a father must wear a smock, know how to breathe, and make sure film is in the video camera.

In 1950, a father came home from work to find his wife and children at the supper table.

Today, a father comes home to a note: "Jimmy's at football, Cindy's at gymnastics, I'm at gym, Pizza in fridge. Don't forget to do the dishes and laundry."

In 1950, fathers and sons would have heart-to-heart conversations while fishing in a stream.

Today, fathers pluck the headphones off their sons' ears and shout, "WHEN YOU HAVE A MINUTE.."

In 1950, a father gave a pencil box for Christmas, and the kid was all smiles.

Today, a father spends 400 at Toys 'R' Us, and the kid screams: "I wanted a Game Cube!"

The Bible

A little boy opened the big family bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages. "Mama, look what I found", the boy called out." What have you got there, dear?" With astonishment in the young boy's voice, he answered, "I think it's Adam's underwear ".
