Cross Gates once had two very popular cinemas.

The Ritz was adjacent to the railway station with the site mainly

incorprating the car park to Marks and Spencer food store.

This was opened as the Picture House on Station Road on August 5, 1920 with a name change to the Ritz from October 5, 1938.

The cinema closed with the showing of From Hell to Eternity on May 16, 1965.

The Regal Super Cinema was opened with 1,500 seats (the Ritz had 800) on November 16, 1936 and closed with the showing of The Longest Day on January 11, 1964.

The Regal was completely demolished and replaced with a supermarket building which was known as the Queen's Supermarket, later a branch of Asda, and then split into two to become Mecca Bingo and Chiltern Mills.

There was also a branch of Asda at the top of Hollyshaw Lane at Whitkirk which was also preceded by Queens in late 1964 before becoming Asda in 1966.

It closed down in March 1994 and after demolition the site remained empty until the completion of the Premier Travel Inn in 2002.
