The children are involved in a geography project and wanted the background information on Cross Gates to help them complete it.

After listening to a short talk on the history of Cross Gates by ELHAS member Jacki Lawrence, they spent some time, assisted by other ELHAS volunteers, looking at the displays in the centre.

The seven and eight year olds, many of whom had never seen coal, were particularly interested in the coal mining display, since they had just been told how significant mining was to the area, and how it had contributed to the development and growth of Cross Gates.

However, the display they said they enjoyed the most was the new display featuring toys of the 1950's and 60's. They also enjoyed looking at the archive photographs of Cross Gates and pouring over old Ordnance Survey maps of the area.

On being told that in the 1950s boys and girls were taught separately in their school, one little girl was heard to remark how she thought that would be great as she wouldn't have to put up with the boys every day.

All in all it was a most enjoyable afternoon for all involved and once again showed the society's commitment to involving the whole community in the history of their own area.
