Council saves Horsforth gala parade

The future of the annual Horsforth Gala parade has been secured.

It was feared the event might not go ahead this year after police informed the gala committee that they would need rolling road blocks and policing, which would cost 2,000.

But the Leader of Leeds City Council, Councillor Andrew Carter, has pledged that the council will foot the bill.

He said: "The police are asking for road closures and this has to be done through Leeds City Council and there will be a cost, but we have no

intention of charging the Horsforth gala.

"We want to promote these local community activities and we have asked for a meeting with the police to find out what this is about.

"We do not understand why they have changed from previous years.

"We have made it absolutely crystal clear that we will not be charging

these voluntary groups and we want to encourage them to carry on doing work in the community."

Secretary of the Gala committee, Alan Gray, said: "I think it is great news that the parade will still go ahead as usual.

"There was no way that we could have afforded to pay for the road block."

Member Anthony Hey said: "This gala has had a parade for well over 100 years and it is run by a dedicated group of people who work very hard behind the scenes.

"Last year, the event took place in a monsoon, but we still pushed ahead with it and this year we are looking forward to making it bigger

and better.

Coun Chris Townsley (Lib Dem, Horsforth) said: "Five weeks ago I was contacted by the organisers fearing that it would have to be cancelled.

"I would use everything I can to make sure that the parade keeps going. It is just a wonderful day and it is disgusting that it might have stopped."

Horsforth Gala will be held on Saturday, June 28 at Hall Park from noon. The theme will be flight.

The parade will go along the route from the Old Ball to The Green and across to Hall Lane and on to Hall Park.

The committee are looking for applications for the Gala Queen.

Insp Simon Hepworth said the police supported public events and did their best to ensure they were policed safely and properly.

"The cost application has to be subject to a discussion between the organisers, the police and the council," he added.
