But now, the couple and their son David, 35, and daughter Jennifer, 26, are heading to Spain after receiving help from their family.
Mrs Aveyard, 53, said: "It's a relief but it's obviously still very difficult because we know that when we go, it's final. That's it."
The couple were told about Mark's death via a text message, which said the former Allerton Grange pupil had fallen and hit his head.
However, the Spanish authorities have revealed no information about his death, and his family still don't know what really happened.
They will receive brief autopsy details during their stay in Gran Canaria, but must wait three months for the full report on his death.
However, the couple will have to pay 30 euros for each page of the bulky report to be translated, and a 160 administration fee.
Mrs Aveyard added: "It's a lot of money and it doesn't make this any easier. Dealing with the authorities has been a nightmare.
"We're just grateful for the support we've received, from the priest in Gran Canaria and from our family and friends."
