Conmen deceive Tinshill pensioner

Police are warning people to be on their guard after a 90-year-old man was conned out of a substantial amount of cash by men who offered to resurface his drive.

At about 1pm on Tuesday, April 21, a man called at the partially-sighted victim's home in Bedford Gardens, Tinshill, and suggested his drive needed doing. He agreed an initial price which he then more than doubled before taking the victim to the bank to withdraw the cash.

The next day another man called at the house and said even more money was needed and took the victim to the bank to withdraw the cash.

The man contacted police when it became apparent that no work would be done on the drive.

The first man was described as white, 6ft tall and aged 20 to 30.

Officers are warning people to be aware that conmen using this scam are operating in the area and should treat anyone who approaches them in similar circustances with suspicion and not part with any money.

Anyone who has had a similar approach or anyone with any information on those involved should contact PC 1156 Simon Heathcote at Otley police station on 01274 471462.
