Leeds is currently in the middle of a five-year, 100 million scheme to replace the city's street lights to make the city's streets brighter, safer and more energy efficient.

As part of this process the North East (Inner) Area Committee has allocated, from its Well-Being Fund, an extra 15,000 for the Chapel Allerton ward to upgrade the standard lighting columns to either a 'heritage' style, or so they can be strengthened to hold banners, hanging baskets or festive lights.

Heritage lighting, designed to resemble old-fashioned street lights, can be installed in areas where modern street lights would clash with the appearance and atmosphere of an area.

Columns that are capable of supporting banners, hanging baskets or lights benefit the local area by enhancing the attractiveness and vitality of the street they are placed in.

Councillor Matthew Lobley (Chairman, North East (Inner) Area Committee) said: "I'm really pleased that this funding has been passed. Although the new street lights do a great job in making Leeds' streets safer at night, it's good that we have these options available to complement the character of these three wards.

"This funding allows the councillors of each ward to tailor the lighting to reflect each area's unique character and needs which in turn makes the area more attractive for both residents and customers visiting local businesses."
