Chapel Allerton Arts Festival 2010 gets underway

Comedy, art, puppet-making, fancy dress and lots of live music are just some of the treats on the jam-packed timetable at this year's Chapel Allerton Arts Festival.

Other events include a walking tour of Chapel Allerton, past, present and future, at 7pm tomorrow, "comedy, music and whimsy" from the

Festival Cabaret on Thursday night at Seven Arts Centre, Harrogate Road, and The End of the Pier Show in Well Lane Car Park on Saturday, with the best street theatre, dance and juggling the neighbourhood has to offer.

A parade of giant puppets, made by children at arts festival workshops, will also wind its way through the streets on Saturday afternoon.

Throughout the week, there will be a photography exhibition on the history, people and culture of LS7, at Seven Arts Centre and this weekend there will be face-painting, a mini beach, bouncy castle, storytelling, head massage, and stall after stall serving up food from around the globe.

On Sunday, at 10.30am, people are invited along to the main stage to warm up their vocal cords by joining members of Churches Together in Chapel Allerton and Meanwood, to sing some well-known hymns.

A line-up of some of the area's most talented acts will perform as part of Jazz Sunday, before a mix of soul, reggae, ska and 60s R 'n' B at the Festival Closing Party – Soul Train on Sunday night.

The first Chapel Allerton Arts Festival took place in 1998 after a consultation to identify ways of increasing the sense of community in the area. Its success sparked the idea for an arts centre, a project which subsequent festivals raised money towards.

Years of hard work b dedicated volunteers, plus a 1m fund-raising campaign, finally paid off with the opening of theatre and arts centre Seven in 1997, named after the address of the Chapel Allerton community in Leeds 7.
