Cabbie suggested favours for no fare, court hears

A WOMAN passenger unable to pay a cab fare claimed the driver said she could do "favours" for him instead, a court heard.

Harrogate magistrates were told that after 25-year-old Bernadette Farrant rejected the suggestion police were called and she was arrested.

Zoe Simpson, prosecuting, said Farrant admitted not paying then told police about the favours claim.

Later during an interview Farrant said she told the cabbie she had lost her purse but he said he would take her home anyway. At one stage she said he asked her for a kiss.

Miss Simpson said Farrant's journey to her home in Newby Crescent, on the Jennyfield estate, cost 6.60. But the meter kept running as Farrant claimed to be looking for some cash in her house. The driver kept knocking on her door until the fare reached 12.30.

Farrant, who was not legally represented, told the court she had vowed to keep out of trouble after a court appearance for dishonesty three years ago.

"I just feel ashamed of what I have done," she said, adding that she could not remember much of February 10 because she had been "really drunk."

Farrant was fined 50 with 43 costs, a 15 surcharge and 12.30 compensation.
