Bramley personal trainer hopes to hit fundraising target

Bramley personal trainer Andy Silverman is taking on a new challenge to help a family realise their hopes of raising £20,000 for their disabled child.

The 49-year-old fitness fanatic already holds records for weight-lifting barbells after hauling a 20kg barbell over his head 1,769 times in one hour.

He has also rowed the equivalent of 100,000 metres on a stationary rowing machine in six hours and 40 minutes, and recently finished a 100-mile bicycle ride through Yorkshire in seven hours.

Now he is set to undergo a three-hour endurance test to bring in the last few thousand pounds needed to help Daisy Crookes, who suffers from cerebral palsy and needs a new wheelchair.

Andy, known as the "Mighty Silver Fox" to his mates, is currently in training for the gruelling event, which will feature 1000 box step ups, 1000 press ups and 20 miles on an indoor cycle consecutively at a gym in Kirkstall on Thursday, December 17.

And he is looking forward to his latest fitness marathon, which he believes is the first of its kind.

He said: "I found out about the fundraising for Daisy through a friend whose son attends the same school.

"It seemed like an excellent cause to get involved in and though it's going to be very, very demanding I'm determined to complete the challenge and hoping to set a new type of record. A lot of people think

I'm mad but I'm looking forward to it."

So far 18,000 has been raised in aid of the special 'Dragonmobility' wheelchair for Daisy, who was given just a 30 per cent chance of survival when she was born 15 weeks early.

Daisy's mum Andrea, who lives with husband Richard and their four other children in Armley, said: " I was thrilled when Andy contacted me and told me he wanted to help us reach our target in time for Christmas.

"I explained that we were nearly there in terms of money but he has said that anything over the 20,000 can go towards anything else that Daisy needs. We are very grateful."

Daisy, who received constant oxygen treatment throughout the first year of her life, attends Five Lanes Primary School, in Wortley.

The Crookes family have also received an 11,800 donation from the Cauldwell Children's Charity
