Bishop bowled over at opening of Horsforth sports centre

The Roman Catholic Bishop of Leeds, the Rt Rev Arthur Roche was bowled over when asked to mark the opening of a new sports centre in Horsforth.

The churchman, a keen cricket fan, got in some batting practice when he was joined in the nets by Yorkshire player Andrew Gale who sent down some pacey deliveries.

Though dressed in a cassock and not cricket whites, he stillmanaged to fire back a few good shots.

The bishop, who chairs the college's governors, said prayers to dedicate the new facility at Trinity and All Saints College in Horsforth.

Meanwhile, cricketer Andrew and the Lord Mayor of Leeds Coun Brian Cleasby unveiled commemorative plaques in the sports hall.

The bishop said: "The new sports centre is an immense achievement. It provides an exceptional facility for the whole area."

After the ceremony Andrew, who was named Yorkshire County Cricket Club's Cricketer of the Year in 2006 for his excellent batting, led Leeds Trinity's student team in an indoor nets session.

Andrew said: "This is a top facility, so my best advice for the lads is tomake use of it and keep practising!"

* The college is an accredited college of the University of Leeds and specialises in sport, education and media. It has invested 2min the new centre, which is open to the whole community. The centre, which costs 19.99 a month to be a member, already has 600 members.
