Beeston's New Bewerley Community School: Pupils welcome Czech visitors

Young people from the Czech Republic have been discovering what life is like for pupils at a Beeston school.

Ten pupils and two staff members from Chalabalova in Leeds' partner city of Brno, have been on a week-long visit to New Bewerley Community school in Beeston.

Throughout the week the Czech pupils are learning alongside their south Leeds contemporaries as well as discovering the delights of Leeds, including visits to Ilkley Moor, Roundhay Park and Tropical World and Leeds city centre.

Leading up to the visit the children exchanged letters to learn about the Czech Republic and Brno and the UK, and have been following the global dimension curriculum to develop their knowledge of other cultures.

Patrick Wilkins, head teacher at New Bewerley said: "This is a very exciting week for both schools – the opportunity to act as a host for visitors, make new friends and share experiences is so valuable – New Bewerley Community School really is an international school!

"I would like to pay tribute to the work of Kae Sinclair and her Czech Republic colleagues – Dana Nestrojilova and Helena Matouskova, who have worked so hard to make this visit a reality. I would also like to thank the staff, parents and friends of the school who have acted as hosts for the week – their commitment to this project has been superb. Welcoming a visitor into your family for the week is a very generous gesture.

"Our children are learning so much about this fascinating country, sharing and comparing the cultures of Leeds and Brno and developing a greater understanding and respect for other people in this increasingly international city."

The school also welcomed the head teacher of Chalabalova, Vladimir Moskvan last November, and Kae Sinclair a teacher at New Bewerley who is responsible for developing 'The Global Dimension' curriculum attended an educational conference in Brno earlier this year where she delivered a workshop on The Global Citizenship Curriculum.

Kae Sinclair, teacher at New Bewerley Community School said: "The opportunity to link with a school in Brno, as well as our links with schools in Africa has opened up so many doors for our pupils and has really given us the chance to raise awareness of our own and other cultures.

"All the children involved in this exchange are having great fun learning together."

The school has high hopes that a return visit will be made by a group of children and staff from New Bewerley next year.
