"The song describes how the city has grown on the banks of the River Aire," said Mr Hayes. "Hopefully it will get people singing and it would be great if it were to become Leeds' signature tune."

Leeds City is performed by Laurie Briggs, who is well known to Leeds to Leeds folk as the star of the tribute group The Karpenters.

But she reverted back to her real life persona put her voice to Leeds City.

Laurie has recorded a jazz, acoustic and marching version of the track.

"The acoustic version is a ballad, while the jazz version has a cool easy listening feel while the marching version can be used by majorettes and brass bands," said Laurie.

Councillor John Procter, Leeds City Council executive board member with responsibility for Celebrate Leeds 2007, said: "I am delighted that Mr Hayes feels so passionately about his city that he decided to put his feelings to music.

"It is very much in the spirit of Celebrate Leeds – we want to give every member of the city the chance to shout to the roof tops about the things they love about Leeds."

Coun Procter said Leeds City was recently played at a city council function where it was appreciated by everyone.

"We are looking at further opportunities and events where we can play it," he added.
