Armley Policing: On the Beat NOV 2009
Inspector Mark Bownass of the West Inner Neighbourhood Policing Team gives the lowdown on local policing issues in the community. Updated - November 2009

I've been your local neighbourhood policing inspector for about thirteen months now and over that time we've made some really big changes to the way we police your communities.
One of the main things we've done is free up neighbourhood policing officers so they can spend more time out there in the community working alongside the council and other agencies to tackle the issues that matter most to you.
This year has seen some really good work by the West Inner NPT, Operation Alport saw officers alter their shifts so they could patrol the streets into the early hours, both in uniform and plain clothes, to target known local burglars.
Other initiatives, such as Operation Abbreviate and Operation Diary have seen us focusing our attention on drugs and prostitution in the areas where these linked issues have a negative impact on the lives of residents.
Anti-social behaviour remains very much on our radar. Operation Alphamstone saw officers patrolling the local hotspots and confiscating alcohol from youths and moving them on before they can get drunk, rowdy and cause damage and nuisance.
A dispersal order in the Cedars was also used to combat anti-social behaviour and led to a significant drop in the number of incidents. At the same time we worked with the council and other partners to provide opportunities for local youths, such as the Friday Night Project at Armley Sports centre.
Earlier this month, residents in Armley and Bramley were warned they could find themselves coming face-to-face with one of their local officers if they left their homes insecure.
Officers checked doors and, particularly in the Aviarys and Fairfields, found too many where they could walk straight in. If we can do it that easily then so can the criminals. I'm sure people are tired of hearing this message, but we are tired of seeing people lose their cars or other valuables in burglaries that could have easily been avoided.
As the dark nights draw in, can we remind people to make sure they keep their doors and windows locked and use timer switches to put lights on before you get home. In the meantime we'll be doing all we can to catch the local burglars.
