140mph Headingley driver jailed

A Headingley businessman caught driving his BMW at 140mph in treacherous conditions on the M62 has been jailed for four months.

Irshad Hussain, of Becketts Park Drive, sped for three miles through heavy rain, standing water and spray, Leeds Crown Court heard.

Prosecutor Alisha Kaye said a police patrol spotted Hussain's BMW speed on to the westbound carriageway fat Junction 27, Gildersome.

The court heard Hussain reached 140mph before he braked heavily in the fast lane.

He pulled over to the hard shoulder after missing the Junction 26 exit at Chain Bar.

Miss Kaye said Hussain reversed back along the hard shoulder for around 50 metres before police pulled up behind him.

When questioned, Hussain denied he had reached 140mph and said he had only been travelling at 100 or 115mph during the incident just after 3am on May 5.

He denied reversing along the hard shoulder and said he had pulled over to get his cigarettes.

Hussain denied dangerous driving, but was convicted by a Leeds Crown

Court jury after a trial.

Hussain's lawyer, Suzanne Smailes said he wasn't trying to flee from police and had not skidded, lost control or inconvenienced any other road users.

She said Hussain was the father of twins, one of which had died. The court heard he was needed to transport oxygen required by the surviving youngster at home.

Hussain was said to run a restaurant for his father and mother, who are in Pakistan.

Jailing Hussain for four months, Judge Geoffrey Marson QC said he was "full of sympathy" for what happened to him and his wife in January, but added: "Immediate custody has to be imposed not only to deter you but to deter others from driving at gross speed in such appalling conditions."

Hussain was banned from driving for 18 months and ordered to pay 2,800 prosecution costs.
