IT’S here at last: the long-awaited Victoria Gate shopping centre finally opening its doors today to the delight of Leeds shoppers.
Thousands of people swarmed into the city’s newest shopping destination this morning to get a first look at the spectacular £165m development.
Stores at the centre, anchored by Leeds’ first John Lewis branch, were due to open at 10am.
Coun Richard Lewis, the council’s executive member for regeneration, transport and planning, said the hotly-anticipated scheme is set to be the final shopping centre to be developed in the city as Leeds reaches the epitome of retail opportunities for a city of its size.
He said the development focus should now shift to providing high-quality office space for Leeds professionals.
“We need to have grade A space and Leeds has a shortage,” he said.
