An extravaganza for the sweet-toothed saw the streets of Pontefract taken over by all sorts of tasty characters.
The town’s annual liquorice festival yesterday was packed with fun centred around the treat.
Street entertainment included the stilt-walking Liquorice Ladies with their impressive headgear and Skiband, who donned sweet-themed costumes, as well as Dame Lucy Liquorice.
More than 80 stalls were selling special food and drink, such as liquorice beer, bread, pie, cake and cordial.
Youngsters could try their hand at producing jewellery from liquorice allsorts, creating lemon sherbet in a science experiment and making a sweetie-themed pop up puppet.
Pontefract MP Yvette Cooper praised the event, tweeting: “Great turnout for Pontefract Liquorice fest today – liquorice biscuits, cakes, plants and of course allsorts.”
The town’s Pontefract Cake sweet sparked its longstanding link to the foodstuff.
